June trip 2013 - J_p_n

Coming back from the land of Cute-sy, obsessed-with-small-things, uniformity and perfections.

Realize that the workaholic doesn't stop talking or thinking about work. It worries myself. In the midst of the trip, I kinda stop thinking about it. But when it was the last few days of the trip, my heart pounded so hard whenever I thought about work.

About the perfectionist-cutsey land
Japan is a great place for people to learn. They are perfectionist and a tribe that has high expectations of themselves. To some extent, it can be quite scary. However, it is also of this high expectations, they can excel like no other. Students carry the same school bag, wear the same caps, bow with the same degrees to the tram master… I am an Asian, but these are the details which I can never comprehend. Kat always asked, "Is this uniformity or conformity?"

They are also obsessed with cutesy things, capable of turning anything literally ANYTHING into some cute stuffs. Quote from Kat: just add two big eyes and a mouth. The blood donation mascot is cute, the animals-allowed sign is cute and so on.. They are also obsessed with small things, from small houses, small cars, small amount of food, small flowers… When it rains, the raindrops are small too. Lol.. Later on, I realized it is call 梅雨。Errr… How apt!

About the new-gen Japanese
The new-gen Japanese is very different. They, perhaps, dare to speak their mind, and follow the western cultures. Occasionally, I saw one or two Jap fathers who were pushed the baby prams in the train station. This is definitely NOT a norm. Here, I met two young adults who study French, spoke French fluently and went to Europe for exchange. They know the world, and don’t need people to bow to them. They will say Hi and will give you a goodbye hug. They are not perfectionists and can accept differences.  Thank you Kat, for bringing me to see the authentic side of Japanese.

I got to know this Tokyo girl. She went to France for exchange, been to many parts of the world. She knows everything. She told me it's really stressful here in Japan. One year before Uni grad, everyone has to look for a job. It is the window period to look for a job. (The norm there.) Because it is so competitive, she became really stress. Within a few months, she lost 5kg. She said," I don't know why is it so stress. Here in Japan, the percentage of employment is 95%. There in Europe, is about 50%. So why is it so stress? I don't know. It is just the system." And it is a taboo to ask if you have found a job yet. (hmm... )

I guess it is really stressful in Japan. People like me will never understand.

How those Taiwanese love Japan and Japanese love French
I find it strange that Taiwanese love Japan so much. And I find it even stranger when I knew that the young Japanese generation loves French culture. Everywhere has French words on it, the bakeries, the pastries shop, some atas boutique. It’s like HUH? Did a google search and realize it is indeed true! There’s a Japanese term for people who is crazy about Paris/France.

Asked about the Kimono, they don’t really wear it anymore. The only people who wear it and walked on the streets, are Taiwanese. And when these Taiwanese walked pass ,the Japanese actually gave them the “huh WTH stare”. It’s quite stupid actually. I asked the hostel girl about it, she said no one really wear it nowadays. And who attends “How to Wear It lessons”? Her mother aka 退休人士。LOL.. Seriously, look at how stress are the Jap, who has the free time to wear so many layers of costumes?

I remembered vividly about this Taiwanese classmate who loves Japan. When she talked about Japan, there’s this sparkle in her eyes. Oh come-on, Taiwan is great too! Be proud of your country!

End of story
I guess in every country, there are exceptions. Not every China Chinese is loud and doesn’t queue, not every Jap reads manga and crazy about girls, not every Singaporean can speak Hokkien. (I met Zhi Yi's friend in Osaka, a true blue Singaporean who can't speak Hokkien.) Lol..

We need to each person as an individual and appreciate each one as a whole. =)
